Cold Iron is a rock group closely modeled on The Doors. . . in fact its lead singer Jimmy O'Leary pulls the Jim Morrison bit of indecent exposure. . . a highlight of a book dedicated to anti-culture antics. Chief groupie is one Woody Hagen, a supposedly successful screen writer who never seems to come down long enough to be very articulate. But then no one is expected to be as the plot careens from an in-crowd pot party to a love-in riot (instigated by O'Leary) and up and down the coast of California as the characters stoke, toke and poke everything from the big H to the little m. And play hide and seek and freak with the ""pigs"" and ""narcs."" Drug cultists might groove but straighter heads have long learned that even in storytelling too much speed kills.
