Its symbolic and historic origins; the influences and innovations the Creoles and Americans brought to bear; the clubs (closed affairs) and the balls they give; the carnival courts; costumes; various Kings, krewes and klans; Rex and King Zulu; the varied spectacles and changing customs through the years; and the actual processes of securing invitations to the balls, achieving the status of queenship or kingship, participation, and so on. A handbook on the Mardi Gras which does not want for coverage but lacks the communicative charm of Lyle Saxon or Harnett Kane on the fascinating New Orleans.
