With much the method and the manner of Nomad (Viking-1948) this is again an attempt to show the political and social climate of six Arab lands reflected largely through casual contact and conversation with their peoples. Maugham, an aware observer, made this particular journey through six countries, each influenced by the troops and the presence of a European minority, to assess the strength of nationalism in each, the growing desire for unity and independence. From Spain to Tangier to the troubled area- Spanish Morocco; from French Morocco where the French are increasingly nervous, to Algeria, and finally to Tunisia and Libya, the same hostility and discontent prevails, the resentment of the native towards a class-conscious, European officialdom, with the French-rather than the Spanish, Italian or English- the most backward, the most brutal in their administrative methods...
