Carr (Chelynne, The Bellerose Bargain) continues to keep the old chestnuts of historical romance popping in this latest palpitator, once again about a hapless female Victim and the glowering, lustful Macho Man whom she tames through relentless adoration. Jocelyn Cutler, daughter of a hellfire-preaching peasant, is about to be raped on the roadway by sadist Stephen, son of unscrupulous Julian Kerr, master of the estate of Dearborn. To the rescue, interrupting Kerr mid-bodice: reputed highwayman Sir Trent Wescott, recently restored--by Charles II--as lord of the adjoining estate of Braeswood. (Trent, a super-virile vision with his inevitable black stallion and flowing cape, drives old enemy Kerr off with expeditious whip-snapping.) So poor wee Jocelyn, never really ""wanted"" at home, and desperate to rescue her young brother from Kerr's prison, decides to camp on Trent's doorstep until she can be of some ""service."" Isn't there any service she can offer? Ah, yes, me proud beauty. . .and Jocelyn is directed upstairs. But somehow Trent can't bring himself to have just one night, so Jocelyn is taken on as live-in mistress. At first the servants are hostile, but when Jocelyn proves her loyalty to Trent by helping to thwart a Kerr attack, she wins them over. Meanwhile, at Dearborn, Lord Julian is being pestered by his beautiful, lively niece Adrienne, who knows perfectly well that dear Uncle has taken over property that belonged to her: determined to have her way, she has cast a marital eye on handsome Trent--but is seduced by a lowly scamp. Furthermore, the Kerr/Trent conflict eventually becomes an ongoing feud monitored at Court by King Charles II himself, who favors Royalist Trent but wants peace among peers. And eventually the four young people will pair appropriately and permanently. . .but not until after a murder, a proposal for a bizarre marriage, a revelation of Dearborn secrets, plus a pregnancy and birth. Peppy, silly--and good fun.
