Roderick Cameron, British photographer and art historian, takes his reader on a leisurely tour of India. Stopping off at various temples, monuments, government houses and gardens, he integrates into his architectural discussion, observations on Indian life and anecdotes on Indian history and tradition. There is something almost Victorian in the author's lush descriptions, his somewhat detached manner, and the feeling he projects of taking little serious interest in the vast philosophical issues at stake in India's art, an attitude which would discourage any serious student of Indian matters. Still, it is a diverting book, aimed at those readers who would travel through the wast on an exotic carpet free from vermin, strife, and recondite investigation.
