IN DARKNESS

A very slight fictional conversion (one might even question its necessity) of an actual story of a boy in the Haute Savoie who is' blinded at the age of nineteen. M. Bourgeon keeps the sentimental-inspirational inflection to a minimum; Arthur's accommodation to and acceptance of his blindness admits no self-pity. On his return to his native village from a rehabilitation center; he finds himself ""walking around among a lot of ghosts"" and the evasion of his former friends is as painful as anything he will experience. He resumes his studies in order to-go on to a possible future as a kinesitherapist (masseur); spends a time' with some victims of polio before returning home to practice, and to marry Nicole who is also blind. . . . M. Bourgeon retells Arthur's story iff a most direct and self-effacing fashion and effectively repudiates the title.
