An important addition to an essential series of Field Guides edited by Roger T. Peterson. The scope is immense:- every known species of turtle, crocodile, alligator, lizard, snake, salamander, newt, frog and toad- more than 3000 living reptiles and amphibians were actually collected alive for the photographs (1100 of them, 400 in color) used as illustrations. Drawings, with captions and diagnostic arrows for specific recognition details made the use of the book comparable to others in the Peterson system. The descriptive text includes points of identification, notes on habitat, ecology and natural history. A feature that herpetologists professional and amateur- and amateur naturalists in general will find particularly useful are the chapters on capturing reptiles and amphibians, transportation, care in captivity. Poisonous snakes are carefully described and emergency care of snake bite is discussed. Both Mr. and Mrs. Conant (who made the illustrations) are on the staff of the Philadelphia Zoo.
