Veronica, the sensitive, lovable, hippopotamus heroine of Lonely Veronica and others, is still on Mr. Petunia's farm. In this story, she's feeling rather out of it all. It strikes her that the other animals on the farm are doing a service -- the hens lay eggs, the cows give milk etc., but Veronica discovers that she is doing NOTHING in a big way. There's this about Veronica that has been evident about her in her other books-- she has a literally stunning smile. The smile becomes a permanent fixture when she discovers the variety of ways in which her cavernous mouth can be put to work for the protection and pleasure of the people and animals on her farm. The famous Duvolsin style and color are here again as well as the pointed humor of a deceptively simple story.
