This is a totally incredible but not unattractive romance set in the present and the 18th century, having to do with fatal love, hidden treasure, a haunted house and the inheritance of curses. John Montrolfe, a misshapen cripple who is also a nuclear physicist, comes to Cliff House to claim his fortune. There he dreams, as have all the Montrolfes before him, of a beautiful sprite whose spirit dominates the place and whose Journal he finds secreted away. He learns of Cathrine Barton's unfortunate love for an illegitimate Montrolfe, her betrayal and grotesque death. Later, through a present-day descendant of one of the characters in Cathrine's drama, he further learns of an awful miscarriage of justice which he, being miraculously released from the curse of the Montrolfe, sets to rights, abandoning Cliff House to the aggrieved descendant and his bride-to-be. The story is full of discrepancies but for a while it almost has a certain charm.
