A timely book by a man who has lived among both whites and blacks of Africa and truly understood their problems. This text is a masterly portrayal of the personalities of those men who are shaping the destinies of contemporary Africa:- Sekou Toure, Nkrumah, Hassan II, Bourguiba, Nasser, Mboya, Welensky, Verwoerd, Kasavubu, Tubman, Olympio, Senghor. Few other works give the reader such understanding of the mind of the African leader. Their goals, what lay behind the events of their lives, and their political ideologies, are all set forth with penetrating insight. His analysis of what underlies the occasional outbursts of blind hate on the part of Black Africans throws ways of hope and knowledge into an area clouded with fear. The author's reaction to Verwoerd's policy of white supremacy is equally illuminating. Here at last is a book that seems both true and constructive. Although written with deep compassion for the African nationalist, the author maintains a scholarly detachment and a scrupulous fairness. He seems to know what he is talking about, and anyone concerned with this grave problem area will find his book immensely valuable as well as interesting reading.
