Charm is the characteristic most descrptive of Rolfe Humphries' words. He has wit and a sense of satire which are combined with a sense of chivalry and, above all, (a quality rare in poets) a disarming modesty. All these traits render him read able and pleasant -- as readers of The New Yorker, where his verse most often appears, will testify. None of them render him great -- he makes no such pretensions -- but his lyrics are among the most graceful verse being written today. If any poetry commands a popular audience these days, this volume should. It is essentially easy reading, melodious and agreeable, with a touch of worldliness- almost vers de societe but not quite. Not for highbrows but certainly for civilized tastes.
