by Ron Maris ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 1, 1990
The brief text here describes the experience of Bernard, an elf-like figure fishing in a quiet pool where ""Nothing ever happens."" Delightfully, Maris' subtle, detail-filled pen-and-watercolor illustrations contradict the words: as frogs, mice, and even fish apprehensively observe, a cat creeps up on a pheasant that returns to surprise puss into an unexpected leap into the pool; meanwhile, insects explore Bernard's cap, and a spider constructs her web. Maris' engaging books are always deceptively simple; this one, with split pages to double the visual surprises, will reward many rereadings. A lovely incentive to the pleasures of careful observation.
