SWORD OF THE HAUSAS

Lieutenant John Glover, later Lieutenant Commander John Glover, in Her Majesty's Service is injured while routing a band of pirates, and takes a little time out while recuperating to fall in love with a good-looking nurse. He returns, however, to help shoulder the White Man's Burden and swashbuckles his way down the Niger, is then made Commander of the West African force to be composed of natives (Glover's Hausas) and conquers a band of terrorists. Somewhere along the line he contracts a fever, which provides some time for him to go home and marry his nurse, but he comes back again to lead the force against the Ashantis. He is made Governor of New Brunswick, and then of Lagos and the book ends with the natives of Lagos spontaneously bursting into Rule Britannia. The out-of-date plot would make good ate late show material. The book is profuse with strange dialects, but it is also ull of fast-moving adventure which will make it appealing to uncritical boys.
