CAPTAIN SNAP AND THE CHILDREN OF VINEGAR LANE

In a generous, large format that suits it perfectly for group sharing, an old-fashioned story with a plot almost as basic as ""boy meets girl."" Everyone is afraid of old Captain Snap, who lives in a cluttered, ramshackle house; the kids dare each other to taunt him, then bolt in gleeful terror. But when they discover the Captin ill one day, they provide him with food and blankets. Thus begins a friendship and the discovery that the Captain--now called ""Scrap""--can fashion marvelous things from his junk. Schotter brings engaging detail and the enthusiasm of a compelling storyteller to her rendition of this well-worn plot. With a resist technique, Sewall uses broad, black defining lines and cheerful colors in unusual combinations in her lively illustrations.
