The little known emperor, Dom Pedro II, ruler of Brazil and the only genuine emperor born and bred on American soil, receive attention in this second book this year on his career. This is a rather sentimental history, which is revealing, well-written and sympathetic, with a good liberal slant. As compared to the earlier Dom Pedro of Brazil by Mildred Criss (Dodd, Mead, P. 81, 2/15 bulletin) this does not rate quite such a high recommendation, but material on South America is of great use today, and this new title is better handled for this younger group. The junior high school may use it for reference but older boys and girls will enjoy reading it through.
