From Britain, a Christmas story with a new plot: Charlotte doesn't know how to read yet, but she loves to write, accurately copying what her mother puts down at her dictation. Still, when it comes to the important letter to Santa, her explanations about where she'll be sleeping while the grandparents are in her room go on to such length that her gift list is relegated to a second page--and then she sends the family marketing list instead, by mistake. Santa is mystified, but obliging; and fortunately, by the time Charlotte finds carrots, nuts, and even fish in her stocking, she just happens to have been worrying about the creatures outdoors in the snow who need exactly these things; moreover, Santa has included a surprise: a toy that is ""the perfect present for a little girl who liked to look after animals."" The quiet story is told with a warmth that will carry readers happily along. The pleasure is extended in the watercolor illustrations, showing the cozy untidiness of a house with small children and the whole family lovingly sharing their holiday. Young readers will be especially amused by Charlotte's letters, which they will be able to read. A very nice addition to holiday collections.
