A light, slight novel which deals with the intermission when Sophie halts during her two year chase (""every day worse than ever"") of her love affair with Philip because first an older woman and then a psychic tell her that she's wasting herself. She's 31. And the most that Philip offers her is a possible five years. He's most attractive but then he regulates everything and sets the terms, even this time limit. More loved than really loving. That is about the entire book which adds a few characters (particularly her mother) and scenery from London to Brittany on the glossy side (with a few heirloom accessories -- Sophie with a fox fur around her neck?), but it's all as temporary as Philip.
