Paradise is a small strip of beach, off Cuba, and a point of no return for Big Mac, who is white, and Little Mac, a Negro, who saved his life in Korea but in turn owed his to Big Mac who helped him escape a lynching in the south. They are joined by an old man, you guessed it- Old Mac- who is running away from the death of his wife, and Gay, who is running away from the death of her father, and tries to suicide. The friendly solidarity of Big Mac- and Little Mac- given Gay something to live for- and up to; she proves her new courage when she is attacked by a sexual degenerate; and her love for Big Mac, and his for her, gives them all a reason to go back- to start again... The beachcomber- the bearded stubble which betrays the heart of gold- probably the real trouble here is that sex and sentiment and salvation do not homogenize.
