The termination of the bloody Civil War, which ended in victory for neither side, also sounded the downfall of the Democratic party, and the concentration is on this particular period. Nichols contends that the cancer within the party was just a symptom of the identical rancour which eventually caused the breach in the Union. Although primarily a study of ""American democracy"", as Nichols refers to the Democratic party, there is an ample background of social and political determinates. A comprehensive and thorough work that gives a competent understanding of the workings of polities, highly recommended within its specialized field.
