by Rumer Godden ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 1958
Six-year-old Ivy, an orphan child, is so forlorn on Christmas that she is forced into the comfort of fantasy and sets off in search of a make-believe grandmother. No less forlorn is Mrs. Jones to whom Christmas is strangely melancholy in her childless home. And then there is the little doll, Holly, who desperately wishes that a child would claim her. Against a frosty English setting the Holly the ivy are united in the warmth of Mrs. Jones' love, and, one assumes, live happily ever after. Despite the somewhat contrived use of the Christmas carol theme, Rumer Godden's text and Adrienne Adams' dainty illustrations combine here in a delicate and tasteful English Christmas trifle.
