THE PHANTOM CYCLIST: And Other Stories

The phantom cyclist Per is only one of many ghostly playmates who appear in these stories to the grave delight and untroubled acceptance of their human friends. Ainsworth repeats the same theme in a variety of settings -- from the upstairs nursery and neighborhood sled run to a lonely seaside tower -- and she recalls both the real and fantastic occupations of her young middle-class ghosts with a hushed deliberation. The cozy English surroundings might be a bit suffocating for the average American child. And though the cyclist, ""The Silent Visitor"" and ""The White-Haired Children"" could each raise a few goosebumps during a rainy afternoon storytelling session, one lonely, prematurely dead child is probably all even ghost lovers can take at a single sitting.
