Three tykes at twilight lose their ball over the wall. . . of Carrie Hepple's garden{ Craft establishes a hushed, shivery mood straight off--though it's hard to understand what is so fearful about old Carrie's glimpsed and rumored doings in the first place. Unsurprisingly, when the children do crawl through a hole in the wall, the old lady they encounter is a kindly soul who shows them her flowers and gives them sweets. But Craft nicely stretches out the children's apprehension. (Regarding the promised treat, ""A hermit!/ A hermit's an old man/ who lives all alone!/ Does Carrie Hepple keep them/ locked in a crock of stone?"") And Haas conjures up a pretty green mist (with, at this point, shadowy hermits trapped in the background) that hints of magic and encourages whispers.
