This can be bracketed with the Bible designed to be read as living Literature edited by Krnest Sutherland Bates, (Simon & Schuster) and should appeal to the same seeker after knowledge in his realm of literature. The modern layman is too often prejudiced against reading some of the world's greatest writing by the standard Bible format. Here the material has been edited, expurgated and rearranged for reading as literature in continuity, as history, poetry, biography, etc. Blake illustrations set a stamp of high quality on the format; marginal sketches and decorations by Ruzicka, a beautiful typography, fine quality paper and binding make it an important gift book. The elisions are skilfully handled; but the rearrangement will prove a hurdle to the conventional. For example, the Proverbs and are in a section following the Gospels and Epistles as being distinct literary achievements apart from the history of Israel, the story of the Creation and Early Man, and so on. The Prophecies of the Messiah are grouped together. Special sections repeat the Commandments (already included in the story of Moses)- the Covenants and Holy Communion, although most of the texts have appeared elsewhere. Interesting- provocative- and very beautiful to look at. A valuable factor is the type of Index, in which the Biblical references make it possible to see exactly what is used and how.
