by Ruth Landes ‧ RELEASE DATE: N/A
An anthropologist, particularly concerned with the Negro, Ruth Landes, stayed for a time in Brazil's Bahia, of which this book is an account, descriptive rather than scientific. Here she witnessed the various aspects, social and religious, of cadomble, the cult (part African, part Catholic) which dominates the life of the Brazilian Negro with vigor, with pageantry. Here, although a white woman, she met the priestesses of the temple, the powerful Monininha, chief priestess, watched the rites and ritual, ceremonials and cures, dances and festivals, until her final expulsion from Brazil by the police... A visual, sympathetic record of this particular cult, necessarily circumscribed in interest.
