HIDING THE BELL

The British are coming, and twelve-year-old Ben Miller and the rest of Philadelphia intend to safeguard the State House (now Liberty) Bell, symbol of their independence. Hidden under a pile of hay, the Bell is to travel on Uncle John's Conestoga wagon to Northampton (Allentown) for safe-keeping. Everything moves smoothly until the appearance of the mysterious man with a ""tarry pigtail"" and black patch over one eye, the same stranger Ben and cousin Johnny overheard plotting with the town spy. After questioning by Hessians at Quaker Gibson's farm they resume the journey until the bell accidentally slips from the wagon; thank goodness Frederick Lesser is there to complete the journey, with Ben pointing the way. A simple declarative trip with a familiar ring of patriots.
