In 1955 an unheralded book entitled How To Have A Green Thumb Without An Aching Back (Exposition Press) was published, and rapidly proved that word of mouth and the crying need of the ""aged, the indolent and the busy"" provided all the impetus needed to make this a best seller in its field. The sales and the interest aroused have gone on- and now Roth Stout has written a sequel. It is a must for all who read and followed- in whole or in part -- the earlier book, with its all out mulching program. But for the still unconvinced or uninformed who did not read the first book, one could wish she had briefly summarized her ""system""- and then gone on, as she does here, to expand the aspects that had not been quite clear, to answer the questions provoked by the book- and its aftermath, to reaffirm - with further examples, confirmation of others' experiences, etc., and to add new facets. The appeal of the book is not only to those who want to cut down on the work of having a garden (flowers as well as vegetables)- but to those who frankly acknowledge themselves neophytes, uninterested in scientific aspects of gardening- and ready to follow one who confesses herself at odds with specialists. The style has the familiar chatty, informal, warm person-to-person quality.
