Whippet racing in England gives the background for a book of dubious interest to American boys and girls. Elements of proven appeal to children are here, but the total effect is hackneyed and the British dialect seems obscure. Evan Johnson, the protagonist, has only his black whippet dog, Bard, left in the world after the death of his father. Through Bard, Evan finds friendship with wealthy Frank Bennett and his daughter. After winning an important dog race, naturally Bard and Evan join the Bennett family. A standard plot would not be the serious flaw it is here if the dog were a great animal character. But to the contrary, Bard as a dog seems undefined.
