The scene -- the high Sierras -- California; the time -- June 18th; the cast of characters, the wild creatures that live on Beetle Rock -- with humans hazily ""off stage"". A nature book, with accurate details, but a mood almost of fantasy. There's the which fights the coyote who killed her young; there's the grouse which has been wounded by the coyote, but cannot fight back -- hunting food, freezing at hint of danger; there are two bear cubs and their mother, on the watch -- even in play -- against the male bears with their dislike of cubs; there's the coyote stalking the cougar for the remains of the cat's kill; there's the Door Mouse, timidly feeding on nuts hidden by the Chickaree; there's the Mule Deer with his power as leader of the herd constantly endangered by a strong young buck -- and his mute friendship for the Sierra Grouse....A charming book.
