TO SPACE AND BACK

Books about space-shuttle flights are not in short supply, but this one's particular focus gives it special appeal. Though it has an ""answers to questions I am frequently asked"" air to it, Ride's firsthand account of daily life aboard the shuttle will entertain middle-level readers: staying clean, assembling a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, using the toilet--these and many other domestic details add a human dimension to the technological story of space flight. Historical information can be obtained from such books as Dwiggins' Flying the Space Shuttles (Dodd, Mead, 1985); it is equally important to know that even the most intrepid astronauts ""brush their hair back, adjust their caps and scratch their noses one last time"" before donning a spacesuit. Clear, nontechnical descriptions and large, bright color photographs increase this book's value. A high-quality addition to the circulating collection.
