A rousing story of Scotland at the time of the return of the Pretender has an eleven year old heroine, colorful action and its historical thrills in the right spots. A Cameron whose menfolk are out fighting the Redcoats, young Lauren dreams of fighting herself, with a claymore. Though her days are sequestered at home with her Aunt Elspeth, Lauren has her adventures, the first of which is with her cousin Angus when they frighten a group of English soldiers and help the Highlanders win a battle. Later events see her at Skye when Prince Charles is escaping and then as a prisoner of the English until Angus and another cousin, Murdoch, rescue her. Though the story must end in exile in France, it ends too with recognition for Lauren from the Prince- and with the high-hearted spirit of a country behind a man who was probably more popular because he never became king.
