Present day Trinidad is the background for the story of Tiger, a young Indian, self-educated and introspective, who leaves his little house and garden in Barataria to return to the sugar cane country of his childhood for one year to help his father, recently appointed foreman of an agricultural experiment station. Tiger burns his books, ignores his wife and child and takes to drink, when his passion for a white woman gets the best of him. But in working on the land, talking with his friends and planning for the future, Tiger comes to a better understanding of the world and himself. Authentic (the careful reproduction of the native brand of English is sometimes a fault, sometimes a virtue), convincingly colorful, often moving, more often humorous, this story of the West Indies and a young man who typifies the problems of that region provides different, interesting and entertaining fare for the thoughtful reader. But it certainly lacks the broader popular appeal and impact of another Caribbean novel--Island in the Sun.
