Antony Maitland, barrister, was dragged into this case, almost by his wig, when a gruff lady barrister persuaded him to take Fran Gifford's defense. It had already been decided in Chedcombe that the girl was guilty and Fran herself gave Maitland no help. He's awfully good at solving murders while engaged in trying them--as in Bloody Instructions and Trusted Like the Fox.
