Lawyer-sleuth Anthony Maitland (They Stay for Death, etc. etc.) and a knotty-problem case, largely played out in court with help from leading barrister, uncle Sir Nicholas. Together they're defending old acquaintance Detective Inspector Lawrence Mayhew and young assistant Detective Constable Gerard Harris on charges of perjury and extortion in the arrest of a pair of salesman on a murder charge. The murder, of small-store owner William Goodbody, appears to be part of a well-camouflaged protection racket, and there are seemingly respectable witnesses with evidence damning to the defense. How Anthony and a slightly less glacial Uncle Nick turn things around, on the slightest of clues and hunches, with a just barely believable kicker in the last few pages, makes for one of veteran Woods' better entertainments. It also re-emphasizes the presence of a faintly sinister new enemy for Anthony in Assistant Commissioner Sir Alfred Godalming, to take the place of retired bete notre Briggs.
