HAPPY CHRISTMAS, GEMMA

A Jamaican family's warm, happy Christmas, celebrated with the enthusiastic interference of its youngest member, narrated by her older brother. Gemma's first Christmas is joyfully destructive. While the brother puts a star on top of the tree, she is busily pulling one off below; when he wraps presents, Gemma tears up labels, and so forth. Through the preparation for, celebration of and winding down from Christmas, Gemma's participation in the family's activities are described in cheerful, matter-of-fact tones; everyone is delighted to have her around to share the fun. Ormerod's well-known talent for depicting babies in action is used to the fullest as Gemma drops, pulls apart and crawls over, under, around and through, all with an expression of happy absorption which focuses each four-color illustration. Although virtually plotless, this should be a source of enjoyment for the youngest.
