A straightforward rendition of the history both past and present of Communism, its ideals and actualities, is more reminiscent of a propaganda pamphlet than a scholarly discussion. Filled with useful information but toned by the ballyhoo of the soap box, this covers the doctrines of Communism, Stalin's reign of terror, communist activity during World War II, the post-war usurpation of satellite nations. A brief survey of the history of Communist China and how it fares today, a glimpse inside Russia with emphasis on schools and youth organizations, some pertinent facts about Communism in the United States definitely offers young people a fine springboard for further reading. Study aids to check comprehension and encourage discussion appear at the close of each chapter, making the book an interesting aid to discussion groups in and out of the classroom. The text itself proves the case for democracy. Indulgence in propaganda reduces the level.
