Nick and his dog Bert are lured once again to Dr. Merlin's Magic Shop (1973) when the wicked magician disguises his place as a bakery. This time Dr. Merlin intends to transplant Bert's smart brain into his own smart dog, who would then be doubly smart though Bert would have to do with a brain from a mouse, but Nick saves his pet by turning the doctor's new wand upside down so that Nick and not Dr. Merlin ends up wearing the powerful magic hat. Boy and dog escape this time in a tempest of flying creampuffs, cakes and custard pies -- making for more frenzy per word than is usual at this level but leaving nothing behind except a lot of smeared custard.
