Twice removed from the source, this is a picture story made from the Swedish film made from the book, and it succeeds neither as story nor as picturialization: it fails also as a temptation to a full reading since it discloses the plot without suggesting the richness of the original. The faked photos and abbreviated incidents merely seem silly. For Swedish children, familiar with the story, the film may have been a natural, a chance to explore the country with Nils via color photography, and it might have something to offer American children too, but this book, as a book, is an emasculation.
