Plunging once more into the turbulent adventures of gorgeous, sensuous, heroic, psychic, crack-shot Angelique, we find ourselves swept into a whirlpool of plot elements from eight previous vols., all of which are footnoted (""See Angelique and the Demon"") rather than explained. Angelique, the irresistible Wonder Woman of 18th-century France, is now reunited with her Superman Joffrey de Peyrac (a one-time noble and relative of Louis XIV almost burned at the stake for sorcery, then a pirate in the Mediterranean, and now an empire-builder in Quebec), but the long arm of the Sun King still reaches out to grab at these two former rebels--in the persons of various functionaries, Jesuits, second-string murderers, and one Count Bardagne, an old flame of Angelique's. Can the grasp of Louis be turned into a friendly handshake across the seas by Angelique's charm/brains and Joffrey's heroism/money? Can Aphrodite and Mars outmaneuver Zeus? Will they make it to Montreal? Probably, but not in this episode. Do not attempt to jump into this series in midstream--the water will be way over your tête.
