BOOK COLLECTING: A Beginner's Guide

Practical and properly admonitory but lacking the bibliophilic contagion of, say, the best of A. Edward Newton (Amenities of Book-Collecting, etc.) or A. S. Rosenbach's avuncular Book Hunter's Holiday, this handbook introduces the novice bookman to the limited collecting essentials -- terminology, maintenance and selection, the latter by both subject (fiction, biography, children's literature, and the like) and format (fine bindings and printing, private presses, first editions). Stewart's English accent -- he operates an antiquarian shop in Gloucestershire -- is rather pronounced for an American audience and, we regret to say, John Fleming's brief foreword stressing examination and collation adds little. Most of the information herein is available from numerous similar titles -- hence suggested only for collectors collecting books on book collecting.
