THE HOT DAY

The boarder's room is a cool gray island amid the boiling yellow heat of a Lower East Side summer (""in the old days, before air conditioning"" according to the jacket copy). When the boarder, Mr. Peretz, goes out to the theatre, Sadie and her numerous siblings sneak into his room and use his electric fan to generate cooling whirlwinds of talcum powder. A mischievous idea, plainly executed and appropriately old-fashioned looking.
