DAVID AND DOG

The loss and retrieval of a favorite toy animal is agreeably handled in this story of preschooler David who leaves Dog outside big sister Bella's school when he goes with Mother to pick her up. Readers will remember where, but David doesn't--until he finds Dog for sale next day at the school Summer Fair. Before he can scrape up the 5¢ to buy her, someone else has; but Bella, who has a whole bed full of stuffed animals and has just won a huge teddy bear at the Fair, wins David's loving gratitude by swapping Teddy for the irreplaceable Dog. Pleasant, if unoriginal--as usual, Hughes' rumpled tots and general clutter make you feel instantlyat home.
