U.S. and Canadian nationals who date back to World War II will have their memories tugged by this suspense adventure. Those were the days when nobody had to be convinced that Germans were the living repositories of superhuman technical skills and fanatically devoted to the Fatherland. This story of an attempted escape from a Canadian camp for hard-case German prisoners would have had no doubters. Younger readers will have to suspend their disbelief but will be amply rewarded by the entertainment in following the detailed engineering of a clever, acrobatic breakout by three prisoners who leave the rest of the internees to bamboozle the camp authorities as they ride across Eastern Canada into the U.S. and make it to the edge of the tide before recapture just as they are set to board a waiting German submarine. The author's opening statement says that a breakout was foiled from Bowman but that this story is fictitious. Nevertheless, it reads with the certain and simple energy of yesterday's propaganda.
