by Siegfried Giedion ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 13, 1948
At this price, this will hardly turn out to be a runaway best seller! Dr. Giedion, author of Space, Time and Architecture, explores our modern way of life in terms of the mechanization that has helped to bring it about and that in turn has brought about further mechanization. There are over 700 pages of fascinating curiosa, lavishly illustrated with early prints and patent office drawings, on the elements and origins of mechanization and on its expression in several areas -- particularly lockmaking, agriculture, breadmaking, butchering, furniture design, kitchen appliances, and the bathroom. Perhaps we missed the point but we found it interesting in the details of gadgets and machines, but ponderous in terms of historical and philosophical implications.
