WHO STOLE THE APPLES?

First published in Germany in 1977, this rebus story is reported to have sold more than 500,000 copies in 14 languages. A pony lives in a forest with an apple tree; when the apples vanish, a bear joins him on a quest that takes them across the sea to find the apples; distributing apples to those who helped them, they return home with just two apples, one each. Rather far-fetched, and the telling is not distinguished; but the bright, stylized illustrations and the always-popular rebus technique, exceptionally well executed here, should make this attractive to American families.
