Set in Norway during the Five Dark Years -- (1940-1945) this focuses on Stephen, an old Polish sculptor who is a prisoner in a Russian-German camp. The escape is intricately engineered by Jensen, the town's station-master, and carried out with the help of Ingrid and Elling, two teen-agers, and Peter, a Russian guard. The maneuversm the disguises, the near-discoveries, are fantastic, but all are made convincing by a talented writer. The Norwegian people and countryside are depicted vividly, and character studies of various individuals are accomplished through the exciting course of action. Worthwhile reading with romance as a side-line for boys and girls.
