FREEDOM FOREST

Although admittedly slight and sketchy and lacking the sustained emotional appeal of Born Free. Sigvard Berggren's true-life adventures with a Sudanese pet lion still has much the same genuine charm as its famous predecessor and should certainly captivate all animal lovers whether they be youngsters or adults. Wild-life photographer Berggren's relationship with Simba began by chance in the jungle when he found the cub motherless and decided to ""adopt"" it. The subsequent journey through Africa and Europe back to Sweden and Simba's new world of snow and domestication, proves alternately exciting, amusing and, at times, heartfelt, as the slow growth of the lion from suspicion to trust and then love in simply and touchingly revealed. Photos of the harmonious Berggren household (he's got wife, children and a menagerie including leopard, cheetah, rhino, collie- all playmates, incidentally, for Simba), plus a fervent plea for the preservation of African fauna round out a dandy little book.
