by Stella Gibbons ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 24, 1938
The author of Cold Comfort Farm here strikes a skilful blend of substantial, old fashioned worth, and subtle mockery. A solid, old-fashioned novel of middle-class English people. Her heroes and heroines are mediocrities; the scene is a small Essex village, the Withers' family consists of parents who are stand patters, two daughters in their middle thirties, and a daughter-in-law, young, stupid, ingenue. The story is the revolt against the stultifying life of the village and the author has an eye for telling detail, for delicate handling of commonplaces of life. A long novel but perceptive and entertaining. A witty and intelligent book.
