BASSETT

COLD COMFORT FARM, although it had a rather small sale, won plaudits from the discerning critics, who heralded Stella Gibbons as a humorist of a new order. Now comes BASSETT, and although it will probably have a bigger sale (due to its being more of a conventionalized story), it won't strenghthen a reputation as a satirist of biting humor -- but will establish her rather as a gentle cynic, with more of sentiment than the first book indicated. This is a story of spinsters -- all kinds -- and it's rather fun, in a quiet way. But it won't set the world on fire.
