The story of how Lawford got into the service in 1914 gives the book a first rate send-off and sets the pace of an extraordinarily interesting personal narrative, characterized by British understatement, but emerging -- in spite of it -- as keen adventure, both during the years of the war (when he served in India and Arabia), and later in refugee relief work, in service in the throes of the White and Red Civil War in Russia, in anything that offered a job and excitement. There's an ironic twist of humor in the telling. Sell as primarily good autobiography with a British Agent market.
