A top-notch, comprehensive cat-care guide by ASPCA veterinarian and TV personality Kritsick. An exceptionally broad spectrum of subjects are covered here in chapters that are brief and well-organized, and which contain useful facts and tips related in a clear, accessible manner. Sound information is provided on everything from selecting a cat (mixed breeds and adopting from shelters are extolled), choosing a vet, and neutering, feeding, grooming, and training (practical advice is offered on solving such problems as aggression and litter-box avoidance), to teaching an owner how to spot symptoms of illness and to administer both simple and more complex treatments. The extensive first-aid section, alphabetized for quick reference, gives instructions for putting together a first-aid kit, and offers explicit directions for handling emergency situations. The remainder of the book consists of short but well-informed descriptions of all the major diseases and disorders that can befall felines. The chapter on nutrition could have benefitted from further elaboration, however. Far superior to his earlier, autobiographical work, Creature Comforts (1983), and decidedly one of the complete and useful cat manuals in some time.
